Once I read an article about dopamine detox, I got interested in digging more deeply about the benefits of dopamine itself so that I associate with the use of spare time wisely:
1. Has a function as a neurotransmitter
In the body, dopamine is known as a neurotransmitter, that is a chemical compound that acts as a stimulus (message in the form of stimulation) to nerve cells, both in the brain and in the muscles.
2. Generates positive feelings
Dopamine affects the emergence of pleasant feelings such as falling in love, joy, motivation or self-confidence. However, if it is released excessively, this hormone can make one obsessed with something.
3. Influences behavior
Dopamine can also affect one’s behavior. When released in the right level, dopamine will make one more excited and motivated.
4. Supports digestion and stamina
Dopamine can help the digestive process, which allows the digestive tract to digest nutrients optimally. In addition, dopamine can also increase stamina and reduce inflammation.
5. Becomes a vasolidator
At normal level, dopamine in the blood vessels can become a vasodilator. This means that this hormone keeps blood vessels dilated so that blood pressure does not increase.
6. Influences the work of the body organs
Dopamine can affect the work of important organs in the body, such as the kidneys and pancreas. In the kidneys, this hormone will increase urine output. Meanwhile in the pancreas, dopamine will suppress the production of the hormone insulin, which plays a role in maintaining stable blood sugar level.
7. Increases the work of the heart and blood flow to the kidneys
This effect makes drugs containing dopamine can be used to treat shock, for example due to heart failure, kidney failure, injury, or heart attack.
That’s the benefits of dopamine, but if it’s too much it will cause bad side effects:
a) Plays a role in the appearance of disorders in the brain
Too much dopamine released in the brain has been shown to increase one’s risk of developing schizophrenia – a mental disorder that can cause hallucinations and delusions. Conversely, dopamine levels that are too low in the brain are associated with the onset of Parkinson’s disease.
b) Affects the ability of focus
Dopamine abnormalities in the brain are often associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Therefore, people with ADHD will be given drugs to increase the release of dopamine production in the brain.
