John 14: 15-17 (NET) “If you love me, you will obey my commandments. Then I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate to be with you forever – the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot accept, because it does not see him or know him. But you know him, because he resides with you and will be in you.”

From the above verses, there are some understandings that I received:

1. The Holy Spirit is given to us as the One who will adjust our frequency or inclination of our hearts to be focused only on Him, loving Him with all our heart, soul, and strength

Making our spirits blazing in the love of God so there will be no self-love, no love of money and no love the world that can sneak in.

2. The Holy Spirit is given to us as the One who will help us to hear the Father speak, to obey every word, and to grow in Christlikeness (perfect in obedience to the Father)

The two things mentioned above are actually very helpful for many aspects of our daily life. Because when our spirits remain blazing and loving Him, we will arise as an enthusiastic, passionate, and hopeful person. That will certainly make our lives different. We become joy makers and peacemakers in this world which is getting darker.

Moreover, since we hear, understand and execute His direction, we’d become effective and productive in doing the work and the will of the Father! Through our lives, His plans and wills would be done on earth.

But it can happen only if we are not passive, there must be active action from us to associate with the Holy Spirit:

1) We must believe and convince ourselves that the Holy Spirit is with us.

Although He is invisible, He is so real. He sees and cares about our lives.

2) Actively pushing into His presence and digging into the truth of God’s word.

This is a ‘struggle’ which becomes our part and it’s a healthy struggle for us. In our daily lives, we must allocate a special time to interact with the Holy Spirit by using His word as material for discussion, so that the Holy Spirit can mold and give us understanding that makes us grow in faith and Christlikeness. At the same time, we’re dismantling the world patterns in our minds and actively wearing the divine pattern of the Holy Spirit.

3) Continue to guard our hearts’ thirst to know the Holy Spirit even more.

In order to always recognize Him, that is always within us, we need actively communicate with Him (using His word as the subject of conversation – what the Holy Spirit likes is the same as the Father’s – they love to talk of the word). It is a very important thing for us to do. As a result, we are getting to know the Holy Spirit more. So that we can be at the position where Jesus was on the earth when the Holy Spirit came upon Jesus. It is not the Holy Spirit that follows us, but we follow the Holy Spirit. We become very sensitive to His feelings and wills. I want to keep growing to know the Holy Spirit.

All of a sudden, when writing this devotion, there is a closing statement that comes up in my mind: The Holy Spirit is a Helper, but He is not the ‘assistant’ of all our desires. He is rather the One who carries the will of the Father on us. And the Holy Spirit wants our lives to be controlled by His feelings and wills alone. Our lives are fully controlled by the Spirit (Luke 4:14) just like Jesus!

My prayer: Holy Spirit, I want to be like Jesus, controlled by You. Help me Holy Spirit, lead me Holy Spirit, mold me to be the person you want me to be.
