In their faith journey, believers must carry a heart attitude that is willing to die, to believe God even when it doesn’t make sense, and willing to let go of everything for Him (all-out). Sooner or later, God will bring together the believer with a spiritual father who carry the same all-out heart attitude.
However, when a believer doesn’t have an all-out heart attitude, they will usually encounter leaders. Even when God gives them the chance to meet a spiritual father, their spiritual eyes are closed. They couldn’t receive the spiritual father as a father, but only as a leader.
Then, what is the difference between a leader and a spiritual father?
In a company, there are leaders and employees. Leaders could lead and direct employees, but limited to the area of work. They don’t have further access to deeply touch the life of the people they lead. If the leader tries to influence their employee’s private life, the employee has the right to object and say, “this is my private life.” Usually employees have the mindset of “As long as I work according to my boss’ will, I have the right to receive my wage, and that’s it. My private life is not for my boss to deal with. It’s my own matter.” The case is different for a spiritual father.
The discourse below will show more clearly the roles of a spiritual father.
In Genesis 22:1-2, the Bible wrote on how Abraham received the word to sacrifice his only son, Isaac.
Genesis 22:3 (NASB) So Abraham rose early in the morning and saddled his donkey, and took two of his young men with him and Isaac his son; and he split wood for the burnt offering, and arose and went to the place of which God had told him.
Genesis 22:6 (NASB) Abraham took the WOOD of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac his son, and he took in his hand the FIRE and the KNIFE. So THE TWO OF THEM WALKED ON TOGETHER.
-Wood represents the cross that every spiritual son must carry
-Fire represents the tool to sanctify a person’s life so they could be offered to God as a burnt offering
-Knife represents the tool used to slay our flesh
1. The word message and the work of the Spirit released by a spiritual father will condition and direct our life towards flesh-crucifixion
Whether we like it or not, every believer must crucify their flesh and old self. Every chaos and problems in believers’ life often happen because they haven’t crucified their flesh in certain areas of life.
Galatians 5:16-17 (NASB) But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not CARRY OUT THE DESIRE OF THE FLESH. For the flesh sets its desire AGAINST the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in OPPOSITION to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please.
Galatians 5:24 (NASB) Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have CRUCIFIED THE FLESH with its passions and desires.
Matthew 11:28-29 (NASB) “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. “TAKE MY YOKE UPON YOU and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and YOU WILL FIND REST FOR YOUR SOULS.
By persevering in carrying His cross, our humanity and flesh will surely be crushed and die. In turn, all our struggle that rage like a storm will start to cease, exchanged by stillness. God’s peace descends and governs over our life.
2. Having the heart attitude that receives the spiritual father (giving weight to his words and directions) will give ACCESS for him to CIRCUMCISE inaccurate areas in our life
Before entering Canaan, the new generation of Israelites born in the wilderness must be CIRCUMCISED in Gilgal.
Joshua 5:7 (NASB) Their children whom He raised up in their place, Joshua circumcised; for they were uncircumcised, because they had not circumcised them along the way.
All our flesh must be slain and cut off in Gilgal, so Egypt (our old life) could no longer slip into our life now. More importantly, the circumcision of the flesh will enable us to connect and inherit the covenant of Abraham.
The question is, who have the right to cut off the most personal and sensitive aspects of our life? A SPIRITUAL FATHER!
Without going through circumcision, we will keep living in our old pattern. Because our old pattern is often hidden in things that are private, we will surely carry them into our daily life whether we realize or not.
I become increasingly aware of this. Those who dare not submit themselves under a spiritual father’s guidance, are those who feel that their life is THEIR OWN. Because they feel so, automatically they think that they have the FULL RIGHT over all their life.
We must humbly submit our lives under a spiritual father. By doing so, we are learning to give ourselves to be OWNED BY CHRIST(Gal 2:20). We will be willing to be crushed and shaped by Him, including TRUSTING THOSE WHOM GOD HAS CHOSEN. And God has chosen spiritual fathers who have gone through the shaping of His hand, putting them over our life!
Joshua 5:8 Now when they had finished circumcising all the nation, they remained in their places in the camp until they were healed.
The circumcision process itself must occur within the house. It must be done under the tutelage of a spiritual father until we are healed. Because the pain of circumcision will make us vulnerable to the enemy’s attack. The atmosphere of divine love in a spiritual house under a father’s guidance will quickly bring healing to us. #iLoveGod
