For the past few days, Holy Spirit invited me to dig and study Deuteronomy 7. Then, I found the following things:
1. God wants us to live in the promised land with complete freedom, especially from the 7 nations that were greater and stronger than us (Deut 7:1-2)
I find that we’re actually already in the middle of our promised land. The 7 nations in Deuteronomy 7:1 are the barriers between us and the fulfillment of God’s promises. Regardless of them being greater and stronger, God has delivered them into our hands to be subdued! In the past, maybe we always become victims of these 7 nations. However, God wants to bring us to subdue them easily, because God has firstly driven out these nations!
It’s interesting to observe Deuteronomy 7:2. I find that it is not God who struck and defeated the 7 nations. God only drove them out and delivered them into our hands. It is our responsibility to strike and utterly destroy them. And God has guaranteed that if we strike them, they will surely lose! When we utterly destroy them, the will surely be made extinct!
God has raised us to become CONQUERORS! We are not His people who could just take shelter in Him passively. I believe that He is growing the nature of the Lion of Judah inside us!
God truly desires for us to access the victory He has provided over the 7 nations who were greater than us!
These are the 7 nations we must strike and utterly destroy:
a. Hittites: terror, intimidation
b. Girgashites: difficulty in believing the Word, always focusing on natural facts
c. Amorites: pride, arrogance, feeling able without God
d. Canaanites: feeling inferior, very powerless; or instead, false humility, always want to look great although is actually weak
e. Perizzites: spirit of disharmony, individualism, selfishness
f. Hivites: living without the cross of Christ, choosing an ‘easier’ life, living life without fear of the Lord, always looking for easier alternatives other than living by the spirit
g. Jebusites: living in contamination, mixture
2. There are several specific instructions that God gave to His people in subduing the 7 nations (Deut 7:2-5):
a. Utterly destroy them, leave none alive (Deut 7:2)!
b. Don’t allow certain conditions where we tolerate the existence of the 7 nations (Deut 7:2).
c. Don’t let mixture between the divine and the corrupt stays in our lives! Because God hates mixture. I remind myself that I am a temple of the Holy Spirit. I must guard the holiness of my life, so none of the corruption of the 7 nations stays within me.
d. God hates mixture. He has cleared away the 7 nations and delivered them into our hands. God has also guaranteed that we will subdue them victoriously.
It is our responsibility to truly subdue them until none is left! We must be truly strict in letting no mixture to stay in our lives. For example, we must not allow certain conditions that make us feel intimidated, influenced by natural facts, arrogant, feeling inferior, selfish, or living in our own terms (Deut 7:4).
e. God instructed us to tear down their altars, smash their sacred pillars, cut down their wooden images and burn all their carved images.
Holy Spirit reminded me that in the process of renovating a building, there will be many activities of tearing down, smashing, cutting down, and burning whatever has been built solidly in that place.
I realize more and more that I must actively build my inner man and persevere in the Word in order to transform, because I’m being renewed (Greek: “Ananeoo,” meaning renovation) in the spirit of my mind (Romans 12:2, Ephesians 4:23, Colossians 3:10).
The old logic that has been built so solidly in my mind must be completely torn down, smashed, cut down, and burned by His Spirit’s fire until none is left! At the same time, I must keep building divine logic by continuously rubbing the Word into my life. #iLoveGod
