I believe that since new birth, we already enjoy a new kind of life; one that is different from what this world offers. The Father is bringing us to re-connect to Himself. When we abide in Him, there is a divine kind of life (zoe) which keeps flowing within our hearts. Just like a branch abiding in its vine, the branch will stay alive and fruitful; because there is life continuously flowing from the vine to the branch.
John 15:4 (NASB) Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch CANNOT BEAR FRUIT of ITSELF unless it abides in the vine, so neither can you UNLESS YOU ABIDE IN ME.
This flow of live is located within our hearts; it’s internal in nature. Connecting to the Father will activate this flow of living water in our hearts – we flow the zoe/divine life in our everyday living. When we receive the flow of zoe, we will truly experience how our source of happiness, peace, and joy is no longer sourced from external things, but from our heart (internal).
In this manner, we could cut off our external dependence of happiness. At the same time our dependence on God will grow stronger by the day. When we abide in Him, our flow of living water will get stronger and stronger – even death will be removed from our life! We “will be like a tree firmly planted beside a stream of living water” (Ps 1:3, NASB). Our leaves will be for healing, and our fruit will be food for the nations (Rev 22:2). Our life will function more and more effectively for the Kingdom of Heaven, and we will become increasingly dangerous for the kingdom of darkness.
The Devil knows about this. And to deceive us, the enemy will keep trying to direct our eyes and ears towards external things rather than the internal. The Devil sets up many snares and launch various deceptions; they are aimed to corrupt and disorganize the divine life that God is building in our lives. By all means, he will try to cut off the flow of divine life in our hearts, so we could finally be disconnected from the Father again (John10:10).
The Devil knows for sure that the moment we’re disconnected from the Father, our old nature will rise; we will rely on our own strength, others, and Mammon again. Without realizing, we are sidetracked to follow this world’s way of life; to depend on external things to stay alive. We no longer rely on the word and the work of His Spirit; we are tempted to look for easier alternatives/shortcuts in life. At the same time, our happiness becomes highly determined by external satisfactions. Meanwhile, such satisfactions are merely temporary – they could never give us true satisfaction or relief.
John 4:13-14 (NASB) Jesus answered and said to her, “Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a WELL OF WATER SPRINGING UP TO ETERNAL LIFE.”
There is a consequence when we rely on external things; facts and data will have the power to influence us, even more so than the faith that is growing within us (which supposedly raise us up to overcome this world, including facts and data)!
1. Guard our connection and dependence upon the Father by building PERSEVERANCE in our lives.
Through the death and resurrection of Christ, we experience victory in Him! That’s why the nature of our battles is no longer to conquest. For Christ has overcome the devil, sin, and death, and He’s been seated in the Throne Room. Our battle now is to preserve, guard, and increase the divine life (zoe) within us, and to flow it consistently and increasingly from day to day.
This is where perseverance becomes an essential element. It enables us to stay connected to the Father. When we start to become ‘LOOSE’ (stop persevering) spiritually, our ‘connection’ is actually ‘shifting’. When we start to be ‘loosened’ from the Lord, it means that we are ‘connected to other things’ in life. It shows that we haven’t put God and our spiritual house as the main priority in our life. If we leave this unaddressed, our heart attitude will slowly become perverted; we will be driven towards the flow of life offered by this world (the river of Babylon; a life that is worldly and humanistic in nature).
John 15:6 (NASB) If anyone does not abide in Me, he is thrown away as a branch and dries up; and they gather them, and cast them into the fire and they are burned.
