If we assume that listening to the word is enough to become a faithful person, we are truly deceiving ourselves. Because those whom we call faithful are those who listen to the word and do it.
It’s true that faith comes from hearing of the word of God. But the way we listen is also crucial. If we truly listen to the word, the faith that arise won’t merely be ‘symbolic’; Holy Spirit will make us doers of the word! That’s how we become the faithful ones! And that is the context of James 2:14-26; to become doers of the word!
James 2:17, 22, 26 (NASB)
Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.
You see that faith was working with his works, and as a result of the works, faith was perfected.
For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.
The question is, how could we listen to the word intently?
1. Listen the word with full determination to become a doer of His word!
Stop listening to God’s word only for our own interest; to receive the latest revelations; to merely receive temporary impartation; or to feel certain spiritual sensations. If we harbor such wrong heart attitude, we will only become a religious person. We deem that we are faithful, but we don’t know the Word (God Himself); we don’t know what is in His heart, including His desire to raise the ministry of the body of Christ! It’s impossible for someone to become a doer of the word if they don’t know His will.
2. Studying His every word (Jam 1:25)
Studying the word is an active measure to see His word from all sides. We use supporting verses to understand the word accurately and wholly. By doing so, we could receive the spiritual dimensions contained within the word. Then, we could declare, imagine and write down the understanding we receive. As a result, the spiritual dimensions within the word could mold us to become doers of His word!
3. Persevere in studying
Earnestness is always tied with perseverance. If we say that we earnestly listen to His word but we don’t study it, we are lying! For earnestness will always push us to persevere!
On the other hand, ‘doing His word’ without listening from God means that we only accomplish ‘good deeds’. They will only send us as far as becoming a good or successful person!
So, studying and doing the word is an inseparable entity – they could not be separated, moreover clashed against one another! Every faithful person are surely doers of the word, because they study His word! #iLoveGod
