Colossians 3:9-11 (NASB) Do not lie to one another, since YOU LAID ASIDE THE OLD SELF with its evil practices, and HAVE PUT ON THE NEW SELF who is being renewed to a true knowledge according to the image of the One who created him—a renewal in which there is no distinction between Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scythian, slave and freeman, but Christ is all, and in all.
As a new creation, God doesn’t want us to keep living in our old identity. Because our old self carries all kinds of conviction, mindset, heart attitude, and lifestyle that are not aligned with the principles of truth.
Slowly but surely, God will keep guiding us to move away from our individualistic life into a corporate life. He brings us to MERGE AS ONE BODY in a spiritual house.
There are people who like to move from churches to churches, roaming around for what they like (and not what’s right). They don’t want to recognize God’s servants who has been shaped by the divine pattern, and submit themselves under their guidance. Truly, those people still insist to live in their old life. Automatically, they will never reach their peak potential in Christ.
So, we have people who go to church loyally, and they have been born again. But at the same time, they still carry their old selves. As long as they don’t put on their new self, they will never be ready to merge in the body of Christ. Not surprisingly, their daily life keeps manifesting their old identity. The life of SELF and the love of SELF still works strongly, resulting in the manifestation of all things carnal, human, and worldly in their lives.
Truly, such a vain life could be ended by a simple action; taking accurate DECISION and having strong DETERMINATION.
Colossians 3:5 (NASB) Therefore CONSIDER the members of your earthly body as DEAD to immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and greed, which amounts to idolatry.
1. A DECISION will put an end to a cycle
Whatever the cycle is, our decision is like a sharp sword that could severe/cut the cycle. If a cycle has been cut off, the same things won’t happen again. The cycle of defeat, flesh, and worldliness will no longer work.
Our decision to walk towards truthful things will activate a new spiritual cycle; a cycle of victory! We will have victories after victories and breakthroughs after breakthroughs!
What makes the cycle of defeat stays is our habit to DELAY. By delaying, we are prolonging the cycle of defeat, and blocking the cycle of victory to work.
End the cycle of defeat now by taking the right choices – decisions that are accurate and aligned to His word!
Colossians 3:8-9 (NASB) But NOW you also, PUT THEM ALL ASIDE: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and abusive speech from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you laid aside the old self with its evil practices
2. DETERMINATION will help us to stay focused in living our new life without being distracted and dragged into our old life again
Our battle is not to seize victory, because Christ has won over the Devil, sin and death. Our battle is to MAINTAIN that victory!
A strong determination will enable us to keep walking; where there is a will, there is a way. That’s why it’s important to persevere in declaring the word and imagining what will happen according to His word.
The enemy will keep sending words that will weaken us, thoughts that curb our faith, and terrible imaginations that will contaminate our minds and hearts. All of them are launched by the enemy to loosen our determination. If our determination is gone, we will return to our old life pattern. So, RECOGNIZE this and FIGHT BACK! Do so by constantly declaring our conviction about what God will do while imagining it in detail (1 Pet 5:8-9).
Every believer must learn to put off their old life. Therefore, when God starts to gather them to be planted, rooted, and grown in a spiritual house, their individual life could be eroded more and more. This will enable corporate life to be built well in the body. Believers in the house will no longer carry their human character or dispute over differences in their tribes, traditions, nationalities, habits, social status, etc. Meanwhile, out there, these differences are often divisive – but not for the body of Christ.
…”but Christ is all, and in all.” (Col 3:11, NASB)
Every potential for conflict and competition in the body of Christ could be minimized. We could focus to pursue His reality and the fulfillment of His plans. We no longer quarrel about unnecessary things. Believers will become more and more sincere, selfless, and full of love.
Colossians 3:12 (NASB) So, as those who have been chosen of God, holy and beloved, put on a heart of compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience
Sincerity will enable all components of the body to merge without the fear of manipulation and without having the profit-or-loss mentality. The congregation could minister God without being motivated by the “white envelope”. Everyone is moved by their heart which loves God; pure and sincere. This will remove ambitions, competitions, and craftiness from His body. As a result, the people will prioritize their function above position.
Colossians 3:13-14 (NASB) bearing with one another, and forgiving each other, whoever has a complaint against anyone; just as the Lord forgave you, so also should you. Beyond all these things put on love, which is the perfect bond of unity.
In a corporate life, unwanted things could just happen because of various factors. However, when love keeps flowing in our hearts as merged members of the body, it will be easy to overcome every frictions and conflict. It doesn’t mean we tolerate inaccurate things to stay. Rather, we have a big heart to receive our brothers, and give them the opportunity to grow and become better. Matters such as unforgiveness, offence, and bitterness will no longer cripple the body. The body of Christ will become healthier and solid. We have the full power to fulfill His plans!
